Lightning Protection

Across the UK, lightning strikes provide an ongoing risk to commercial & domestic buildings and structures.

As weather conditions continue to become more unpredictable it's important that you understand your business obligations within lightning protection regulations, when designing your overall lightning protection measures.

As weather conditions continue to become more unpredictable it's important that you understand your business obligations within lightning protection regulations, when designing your overall lightning protection measures.

At every step of this process, Altus Safety can provide you with all the services you need to effectively plan out your overall strategy. This includes key features like your initial site survey, risk assessment, materials supply and system design and installation - along with ongoing testing and maintenance to comply with the required legislation.

If your business is unfortunate enough to suffer a strike, lightning protection alone can't guarantee the protection of your electrical equipment, that's why we specialise in developing a robust and detailed full strategy covering aspects like lightning rods, earthing systems, surge protection and other risk factors like electromagnetic shielding.

What are the Lightning Protection Regulations?

Under The Electricity at Work Regulations - Reg 4 part 2:1989, it is stipulated that businesses must 'have lightning protection systems professionally maintained to minimise danger.' There are also ongoing obligations associated with the maintenance of your lightning protection system. In accordance with BS6651:1999 for existing older systems and BSEN 62305 for modern systems, lightning protection systems should be tested & inspected annually or at regular intervals - not exceeding 12 months.

However, when undertaking safe and effective maintenance of your system, we strongly recommend doing retests every 11 months. This takes into account seasonal variations and is best practice within the industry, as it ensures your compliance at every month of the year.

The range of legislation you need to follow as part of Section 5 of The Electricity at Work Act 1989 can be confusing, so we'd encourage you to talk to one of our system specialists if you have any questions.

What do Lightning Protection Services include?

An effective lightning protection service should take a 360-degree approach to ensure the overall protection of your staff and business assets. As a UK market leader, this is the key measure we use when creating your strategy, from the initial design installation testing through to the ongoing maintenance you are required to provide annually as a minimum.

As an important part of the maintenance service we offer, we undertake a range of testing - with a particular focus on your Earth Resistance Test. Using both calibrating metres and visual inspection we review important components like your down conductors and 'airstrike components', located on your roof where you are most likely to see the impact of a lightning strike.

These tests can also be combined with your more comprehensive roof inspections such as edge protection, access ladders, PPE kit, safety lines, eyebolts or safety lines, every 6 to 11 months. This approach is also fully compliant with your BS6651 / BS EN 62305 legal requirements, which we take pride in following for every client.
