Suspension Point Inspection & Maintenance

Suspension points can be installed for a variety of purposes and can be found primarily in areas of high footfall, such as shopping centres and high streets. In most cases, they are installed to suspend Christmas decorations or other promotional material such as banners and signs. Due to their location – usually suspended directly above members of the public, ensuring they are regularly inspected and maintained is vital. Some suspension points in public areas are required to hold heavy loads; as a duty holder, you want confidence in your equipment to avoid injuries to employees, customers and contractors.

At Altus Safety we offer suspension point inspection, maintenance and compliance testing services that ensure your suspension points are up to the job of supporting your decorations and signs without putting anybody at any risk of injury.

What’s Involved In A Suspension Point Inspection & Test?

Suspension points that are permanently fixed to a building for the purpose of hanging items like signs, banners and decorations need to be inspected and tested to ensure they’re safe. This test involves a thorough visual inspection to ensure all parts are present and securely attached, followed by load testing to ensure the suspension point is fit for purpose.

All elements of the suspension point will be tested. The fixture itself, as well as all bolts holding the suspension point in place.

After the test is complete and the suspension point is confirmed to be safe for use, you’ll receive a certificate showing that the suspension point passed its compliance test and stating the date of the next inspection for your own records.

How Often Do Suspension Points Need To Be Tested?

Suspension points need to be tested every 12 months to ensure they’re fit for purpose. This is known as the maximum inspection interval.

If, for example, you had a suspension point that you use to hang Christmas decorations over the festive period, and spring decorations for Easter, then more regular testing might make sense for you to ensure your peace of mind.

The 12-month maximum inspection interval is determined by LOLER 1998 regulations and BS 8539, which also make clear the need for suspension points to be load tested during their inspection to protect individuals from risk of injury.
