Want to discuss your requirements?
The height safety equipment and systems you install on site must be tested for full compliance regularly. But what about the building or roof where these systems are attached? Permanent safety systems will often be fixed to the wall or roof, and the integrity of them is usually the most important part of a system. That’s where our structural surveys come in. Have one of our expert engineers conduct a full structural survey today to ensure your systems are safe for years to come. Get in touch to arrange your structural survey below.
At Altus Safety, we can offer a range of services to ensure your height safety systems are fully compliant and in the safest possible condition for your workers. Part of that could look like a structural survey, which we’ve designed specifically to verify the integrity of structures that are vital to your system’s safe use.
We generally split our structural survey across two main elements to ensure your site is as safe as it can be for those working at height:
When you opt for a structural survey with us, one of the most important aspects we’ll cover is the structural integrity of the roof or wall where your height safety equipment is installed. For example it could be your roof for a permanently fixed guardrail system, or your wall for a fixed eye bolt or anchor point.
The point here is that the structure itself is as much a part of the system as the parts that make that system up. Without strong, structural support, the system could fail under load bearing conditions – i.e. should a fall from height occur. Without verifying the integrity of the structure supporting the height safety system, you risk accidents at your site that could have been avoided.
When you work with Altus Safety we use specialist equipment to test the structural integrity of the wall or roof in real time. This could look like a load test, visual inspection, and more. The aim is simple here. Our experienced testing engineers will verify the integrity of the structure so you know it’s strong enough to provide your height safety system with the support it needs to protect workers should the worst happen. Trust our team to safeguard your site today.
The second part of a structural survey comes in the form of a more general height safety assessment on your site. Here full compliance with a broad range of working at height regulations are considered – both from a general perspective but also for system-specific regulations as relevant to the systems you have installed at your site.
Some of the more general regulations we’ll assess your site for compliance with include:
We can assess your site for its compliance with these broader regulations to ensure compliance, both by assessing your height safety equipment, but also your operatives knowledge and understanding of those systems. Any gaps will be identified and presented to you on site, helping you understand the key areas for improvement at your site.
You should see our structural survey as a preventative measure – something a responsible site owner should employ annually to protect workers and ensure maximum safety on site. Work with us and we’ll ensure your dedicated account manager explains what we’ll do, why it’s necessary and any next steps identified by our experienced engineers – giving you complete peace of mind and marking you out as a responsible employer and site owner.
Structural surveys are the only way you can be certain your height safety equipment is capable of actually supporting your workers should a fall occur. That’s true for fall protection systems, fall arrest systems, edge protection, and roof access solutions.
A thorough structural survey will assess the structural integrity of the structure supporting your system and can give you peace of mind surrounding your compliance with relevant height safety regulations.
Protect your workers. Remain compliant. Work with Altus Safety.
This is something of a grey area. Mostly because compliance testing for specific regulations and British Standards is necessary for specific height safety equipment. For example, abseil anchor points need testing every 6 months in compliance with BS 7883 and other similar regulations. Legally, you must complete this.
However, more general height safety regulations like PUWER and Working at Height Regulations make it clear that the system should ALWAYS be fit for purpose and safe to use. That’s where structural surveys can come in handy – between compliance tests for other regulations.
This just offers an extra layer of protection for your workers, supporting greater height safety at your site.
If our engineers notice that there is a problem whilst on site, then they’ll always try to fix it if it’s a minor repair in the first instance. This saves you money on costly revisits and ensures your system can get back up and running ASAP.
However, sometimes a bigger issue is identified. When this happens we will try to book in a future repair with you (if we’re capable of solving the issue) or else advise that you find another company to support with the structural issues you’re facing on the roof or wall supporting the height safety system.
Either way, at this stage your system will be taken out of action until the issue is resolved and a new compliance test has been passed to safeguard height safety at your site and protect your workers from harm.
