Fall arrest ladder systems provide a safe and controlled environment while ascending and descending an access ladder. This fall protection system produces an innovative solution for vertical climbing that provides superior safety. Ladder fall arrest devices connect to a wire for vertical climbing, moving along the track to keep the worker safe.
Should a fall occur, the ladder fall arrest system will lock into place, stopping the fall in its tracks and protecting the worker.

A fall arrest ladder safety device has an innovative system design and can be clamped or mechanically fixed to most structures, including brickwork, concrete and steel structures. Fall arrest ladder systems are easy to use and are commonly installed in a range of different sectors such as hotels, education and offices. It offers ladder restraint, fall arrest, and fall protection when installed.
Users wear a body harness that connects them to a shock-absorbing travelling device that runs along the track. The shock-absorbing mechanism reduces the force on the worker and the system should a fall occur. Users can glide easily along the fall arrest ladder and a smooth journey is guaranteed. Ladder fall arrest systems allow workers to move up and down hands-free without any manual adjustment. This gives workers the freedom to perform their jobs efficiently and safely.
Fall arrest ladder systems for Working at Height must be inspected and compliance tested once every 12 months as part of an ongoing annual inspection to ensure that the system is fit for purpose.
Compliance with BS EN 795: 2012 D, EN353-1:2014, EN353-2:2002, BS 7883 2019 is guaranteed in all our fall arrest ladder services so you know that your restraint fall arrest safety system is designed and installed to all relevant standards and regulations.
Ladder fall protection systems comprise either a track or a wire-based system that can be broadly split into vertical safety lines and vertical track systems. A fall arrest carriage sits inside a guide rail, so that if a fall occurs, the system locks, protecting the worker instantly. They also offer a third point of contact allowing workers to use both of their hands to complete a task whilst remaining securely attached to the ladder for maximum safety.
Using this removes the need for caged access or a safety rail, as the worker is constantly attached to the safety track or wire, protecting worker safety.
Ladder fall arrest systems allow for multiple users per track at one time and they require basic training on working at height and PPE usage. Height safety is important and fall protection is required when the ladder is 24 feet or greater in length. At this point, a fall arrest safety system like the ladder safety system we’ve discussed today is not only recommended, but required in order to remain compliant with all height safety regulations and protect workers in the best possible way.
A fall arrest ladder or ladder fall arrest system must be inspected annually, too – but we’ll explore that in greater depth below.
Users are required to wear an EN361 compliant body harness in order to connect to the shock absorbing fall arrest device. Only attach to the system by means of the front D‐ring on a compliant full body harness. Always check pre‐tension before use.
Fall arrest ladder systems are a safe, aesthetically pleasing and cost effective alternative to traditional hooped ladders.
Fall Protection Equipment is required to be tested every 12 months.
Altus Safety provides a full inspection, testing, certification and maintenance service for existing working at height equipment and we also offer a reminder service via your dedicated account manager to all those who sign up for our maintenance services after initial installation, so you’ll never miss the required annual inspection.
In the event of a fall, a worker using a ladder fall arrest system is far less likely to be injured during the fall arrest process compared to a fall from a traditional hoop system.
These systems provide complete fall arrest protection in the event of accidental falls whilst ascending or descending fixed ladders by locking in place when a fall occurs. This instantly stops the fall. reducing the risk of injury significantly.
The traveller moves easily along the fall arrest rail holding the user close to the ladder, giving the user total confidence while climbing and carrying out tasks at height. However, when a fall takes place the appropriate rescue plan will need to take place.
Whenever personal fall arrest systems are being used, an appropriate rescue plan must be put in place. Whatever rescue system is deemed appropriate will then be used to ensure the worker is brought back to ground level safely.
