Want to discuss your requirements?
At Altus Safety, we provide Vertical Lifelines from a range of manufacturers to be able to offer world leading fall protection and fall arrest support when climbing. Our vertical safety line systems fully adhere to BS EN 795: 2012 C, EN353-1:2014, EN353-2:2002, BS 7883 2019 standards so you can be sure our systems are fully compliant with the latest height safety regulations.
A vertical lifeline system or vertical safety line system is designed to support workers climbing vertical structures. A safety line or safety wire is attached to two anchor points along the direction of travel. A worker then attaches to the safety line using a compliant body harness and safety lanyard, allowing them safe access as they climb.
Should a fall happen, the shock-absorbing lanyard will lock into place, preventing a big fall and protecting workers. For anyone whose workers must climb ladders, traverse large vertical structures like wind turbines or in the aerospace industry, vertical safety lines should be a top priority to offer the best protection for workers.

Essentially a wire is rigged up to at least two anchor points on the roof or vertical structure, providing stable bases that can protect workers if a fall should happen. From there, workers can attach themselves using a safety harness to move around the roof hands free. This allows them to complete any repair or maintenance tasks without having to be in constant contact with the safety line using their hands. Instead, their harness attaches them to the vertical line for safety.
It’s also a requirement if a worker is climbing up a tall vertical structure, as it provides them with extra protection should they slip whilst climbing.
It’s an affordable solution that offers a range of protections to workers. But their installation MUST be carried out by a competent person with the proper training.
You can find that at Altus Safety, where our team of working at height safety experts can design and install the perfect vertical safety line system for you.
Vertical safety systems are designed to be retrofitted to new or existing ladders, making them easy to install and aesthetically pleasing. They’re also suitable for vertical structures and a variety of roof types – standing seam roofs included. We have a comprehensive range of safety lines available for providing safe access for workers in a variety of situations.
Each system comes with a short, shock absorbing fall arrest device allowing for smooth, hands-free operation on ladders ranging from 3-30 metres. Each system also provides complete protection in the event of accidental falls whilst ascending or descending fixed ladders or structures.
These fall arrest systems are suitable for multiple users per system requiring training on working at height and PPE – something our team can also provide. As these systems are available in various high quality materials and corrosion resistant finishes, typical uses range from maintenance access for telecommunications, electricity pylons, railway signals, towers/silos and roof access systems on commercial and industrial buildings.
As well as vertical safety lines, Altus Safety also offers vertical track systems.
Vertical safety lines must comply with the following standards:
Testing/Inspection standards and frequency:
Users are required to wear an EN361 compliant body harness in order to connect to the shock absorbing vertical arrest device. Only attach to the system by means of the front D-ring on a compliant full body harness. Always check pre-tension before use on cable systems.
More than anything else they act as a support device, giving workers the confidence to ascend and descend fixed ladders and structures without fear of falling. But should a fall then happen, the fall arrest device will lock into place along the vertical safety line, immediately preventing the fall from worsening and offering workers the ultimate protection.
A rescue plan must also be in place to ensure that the worker who falls can be helped from their position and be brought safely to ground level.
They both act in similar ways, but horizontal lifelines simply have a wire or safety line from point a to point b horizontally, rather than vertically. We offer both at Altus Safety depending on your needs.
