Freestanding Guardrails: Edge Protection Solutions

A free standing guardrail is a form of roof edge protection that is installed completely freestanding – without fixing to the roof. As an effective fall protection system, it’s lightweight, has a modular design allowing for greater flexibility when installing on existing buildings, and is available as either temporary or permanent edge protection depending on your needs.

Available with corners, access gates, and end terminations – all supported by an effective counterbalance – they can be designed to your exact needs for the ultimate protection for your workers.

Guardrails must be inspected and compliance tested once every 12 months. We guarantee that our freestanding guardrail services conform to the standards set by BS EN 13374-2013 – Class A, BS EN ISO 14122-3:2016 & BS 13700:2021.

The Key Benefits of Freestanding Guardrails

Frequently Asked Questions

As you’d expect, the freestanding guardrail system is completely freestanding, meaning there is no need for drilling or penetration of the roof membrane. No mechanical fasteners are required, yet this lightweight solution is still durable. As a result, it is suitable for new and existing roofs alike.

When inspected for maintenance purposes, the system inspection is made much easier as a result, as our team won’t need to test the fittings and fixtures to the roof, making the inspection more straightforward thanks to its simple design.

Despite its simplicity, it still has excellent safety features that are recommended by the Health and Safety Executive as a first port of call height safe system.

This solution is suitable for multiple users at any one time, and requires very basic working at height training, making it the ideal solution for regular and long duration maintenance at roof level.

Your whole team can be caught up to speed with ease. If you need basic work at height training to be carried out with members of your team, Altus Safety offers a full design, installation, maintenance and training solution for all our height safety systems. Contact a member of our team today.

The material used in these freestanding systems is lightweight, with balance weights often weighing less than 20kg. Each component is therefore easy to lift or move to where you need it, but becomes totally solid when they’re secured together, and there’s little risk of damaging the roof surface when you do so.

When you couple these benefits with the advantage of quick installation, this is a simple and cost-effective rooftop safety system providing ultimate safety.

A freestanding rail has a modular design that allows for onsite reconfiguration (if needed), making them ideal for retrofitting to older buildings, as well as new build constructions. They’re suitable for use on concrete, asphalt, PVC membrane and felt roof surfaces – which we’ll explore in greater depth below.

Freestanding guardrails are a permanent fall protection solution designed to work in many commercial settings. No matter your industry, if regular work needs to be carried out at height or on your roof, then collective edge protection in this form is always recommended as a first port of call for worker protection.

Most systems have base plates that are fitted with bonded ribbed rubber mats, which can include an EPDM foam infill that’s suitable for use on concrete, asphalt, PVC membrane and felt roof surfaces. It can also be used on standing seam roofs, flat roofs and pitched roofs depending on your needs.

As this system is freestanding, there is no need to fix it back to the building’s structure. However, some roof materials will require protection underneath the feet to maintain guarantees for the roof. This can be checked with the roofing material manufacturer or contractor.
