Horizontal, Vertical & Mansafe Fall Restraint And Fall Arrest Systems
Altus Safety provides Mansafe fall arrest systems and fall restraint systems, offering personal fall protection systems on roofs where collective measures are not a viable option. These systems are designed to offer the ultimate protection from a fall hazard but play two distinct roles depending on their use and why they’re needed.

Fall protection can be offered in one of two ways: fall arrest or fall restraint – both are designed to deal with potential fall hazards in an effective way. Fall restraint systems are designed to physically restrain an individual, offering fall prevention solutions that mean a person shouldn’t fall at all. Unlike fall restraint systems, fall arrest equipment is designed to slow a fall to prevent serious injury where one should occur. One system can act as both so long as it satisfies the relevant safety regulations and British Standards.
It’s our job at Altus Safety to design, install and maintain a range of fall restraint and arrest systems. Once you find a suitable fall protection system, come to the leading experts right here, and we’ll ensure it’s a system that matches your needs and is designed to your exact requirements, helping you achieve maximum fall protection for your workers.
Whatever your requirements, we’re confident that our fall restraint system, fall arrest system or Mansafe systems will be suitable for you (subject to us conducting a risk assessment – the initial step in making the correct recommendations). Contact our expert team today.
Fall arrest systems focus on slowing a fall when one occurs. Fall restraint systems are designed to prevent falls from happening in the first place. Here you would identify risks where a worker might fall and then mitigate those fall risks by physically restraining the workers whilst they’re working at height.
It can be difficult knowing exactly which restraint or fall arrest system is right for you – the main point here is that you need to ensure your workers can conduct their tasks safely. In order to do this you need to identify the right risks. An example of a risk whilst working at height could be roof lights, roof edges, or fragile surfaces.
So long as you can identify the risk, you’ll then be able to pick out the best system for maximum safety and to ensure the work environment is one that protects all workers whenever they’re carrying out work at height.
The good news is at Altus Safety we’re leading edge protection, fall arrest and fall restraint experts, so you can rely on the guidance we provide.
First we’ll carry out a thorough risk assessment (more on that in a later FAQ) and then we’ll pick out the best system for you. Your safety is our priority, and we consider all possibilities when looking at fall arrest vs fall restraint systems for you.
The main regulation you need to worry about is the Working At Height Regulations (2005). This essentially provides the framework for all future height safety regulations, making clear that you’re responsible for the safety of all your workers and failing to create the proper safe working environment could land you in hot water.
It’s also important that you don’t just have these safety systems installed to tick a box. Workers need the proper training and support to ensure they can use the systems safely, and those systems all need regular maintenance in order for you to be considered a compliant employer/site.
Our risk assessment at Altus Safety has just one aim: protect anybody on site who is working at height. We always err on the side of caution here, considering worse case scenarios to try, as much as possible, to identify the best way to mitigate risks. And not only mitigate risks, but mitigate risks with a safety factor that protects workers in a way that covers more than just the minimum.
Minimising injury and death is our priority. So we’ll attend your site and identify the risks your workers are facing before suggesting some of the best ways to reduce those risks. After that, we can then design and install a bespoke solution to provide you the best in height safety systems.
Any industry that features working at height or a suspended worker. Examples include:
and so many more!
The best way to improve worker safety is to ensure you have the right systems in place to protect workers. But not only that, a sufficient plan in place should a fall occur.
Fall arrest systems are designed to stop a fall, protecting the worker initially, but you will then need a comprehensive rescue plan to get them back on terra firma in the safest way possible. Rescue equipment should be present on site and trained team members should be on standby to offer the right support to any worker who has fallen who might need help.
A fall arrest or restraint system should be tested a minimum of every 12 months – however, if the system requires abseiling support with safety harnesses, then the system should be tested a minimum of every 6 months.
The aim of these compliance testing regulations is to ensure your system – and therefore you and your workplace – maintain compliance and provide the proper, safe support for workers.
