Commercial solar: plan roof access and fall protection before the panels go on

Fall protection for solar panels should be designed around the roof layout, the access route, the panel position and the maintenance work that will follow.

The best time to think about roof access for a solar installation is before the panel layout is finalised.

Once the panels are in, space becomes limited. Walkways, edge protection, mansafe systems, access ladders, hatches and maintenance routes all become harder to design around. That is where solar projects can create avoidable problems for the people who have to look after the system later.

Get access right early and it stays simple. That is where Altus can help.

Why fall protection for solar panels needs planning early

Rooftop solar is not a fit and forget asset. Panels need planned cleaning and inspection, and reactive visits when something needs checking. Every one of those visits is work at height.

Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, that work must be planned, supervised and carried out by competent people using suitable equipment. HSE guidance on roof work flags edges, openings and fragile surfaces as the main risks. Where panels sit tight against an unprotected edge or a rooflight, whoever goes up next is working near a hazard that is far easier to design out early than to fix later.

Commercial clients are increasingly asking how their new array will be maintained safely, and they ask the installer first. Having a clear answer ready is becoming part of a strong commercial offer, and it is an easy one to build in when access is planned alongside the layout.

Roof Access and Fall protection planned early makes the whole job easier

A solar company that has the maintenance access thought through is easier for a commercial client to say yes to.

The client gets a system they can actually look after. The facilities team gets a clear route to the panels and the records to prove it is safe. The handover is clean, and there is no awkward call six months later when someone needs to get up there and can’t. It shows the client the full job has been considered, and that is the kind of thing that wins repeat commercial work.

The layout drives all of it: where people stand, how they get there, how far they are from the edges. Those choices set what protection the roof needs, which might include guardrail and edge protection, walkways, fixed ladders and hatches, anchor points and safety line systems, or a mix. The right answer depends on the roof. It is not always the biggest or most expensive system, which is why an independent view early on is worth having.

Where Altus fits in

Altus Safety designs, installs, tests and inspects roof access and fall protection. On a solar project, we take the access side off your plate, start to finish.

Send us the roof layout before it is fixed and we will tell you where safe access needs to go, before it costs a redesign. We design and install the system around your panels, so the two work together rather than against each other. Then we test and inspect it on an ongoing basis, so your client keeps clear records and knows what needs attention and when.

One team, from first drawing to ongoing inspection. No stitching together a roofing subbie for the install and a separate firm for the testing, and no gap between them where things get missed. For you, that is one point of contact and one less thing to manage. For your client, it is a clear, documented trail of what is installed, what has been tested and what happens next.

We are independent, so we specify what the roof and the work actually need, not what one manufacturer wants to sell. On a job where you are already managing cost and programme, that helps.

The best time to bring us in

Before the panels go on, the layout can still move, access routes can be protected and the handover can be planned properly. Once the array is fitted, the options narrow and the fixes get more expensive.

If you have a commercial solar project coming up, send us the roof plan or give us a call. We will review the access before you commit to the layout and tell you plainly what it needs.
