Our team of experienced engineers can carry out compliance tests to ensure your system is safe for use and fully compliant with the latest height safety regulations. Contact us for a competitive quote today and a member of our nationwide team will be with you as soon as possible.

Why is BMU Compliance Testing Necessary?

Regularly inspecting building maintenance units is vital. According to BS 6037 Part 1 (2003) window cleaning cradles and other similar suspended access equipment must be inspected every 3 months by a competent person. All of our engineers at Altus Safety are constantly refreshing their knowledge and understanding of the latest height safety regulations to keep your workers safe.

You have a very clearly defined role as the site/building owner. You are, as per working at height regulations, the duty holder and that means ensuring your BMU is fully compliant at all times with the relevant regulations is your responsibility. The following is your job:

  • Ensure the system is safe and fit for purpose
  • Make sure all compliance tests are completed each year, on time
  • Provide workers with the relevant training to ensure the system’s adequate use

Thankfully, you don’t have to shoulder that responsibility alone. Choose Altus Safety to stay compliant affordably, and take away all the pressure with a dedicated account manager that will send out compliance testing reminders well in advance.

What Does BS 6037 Part 1 Say About Testing & Inspecting BMU Systems?

BS 6037 Part 1 (2003) is designed to provide some clarity around the planning, design, installation, testing, maintenance and use of suspended access equipment like window cleaning cradles or building maintenance units.

At Altus Safety we make it our mission to stay up to date with any regulation or advice changes to ensure the systems we design and install are always fully compliant. All you need to do is pick the right working at height safety compliance company to design, install and maintain/test your BMU system.

As for how regularly you need to test and inspect your system, BS 6037 is very clear there too. Each year maintenance and compliance tests should look like:

  • A thorough examination, load test and inspection in month 1 – following initial installation and every year thereafter
  • General inspection in month 3 to ensure the system is in working order
  • Inspection and more thorough examination in month 6 to ensure full compliance
  • Another general inspection in month 9 before starting the cycle again at 12 months

Quarterly. Every 3 months you are legally required to have a competent person (like one of our expert engineers) come out and inspect your building maintenance unit to ensure it is fit for purpose and still safe for all workers working at height. Failure to do so can endanger your workers and lead to legal complications should an accident occur as a result of your negligence.
